Cowgirls Split At UMHB Invitational

BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Mary Hardin-Baylor Invitational.  

Game 1

The Cowgirls opened the day with a 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19 win over Massachusetts-Boston.

HSU fell behind 13-3 to start the first game, but came racing back and eventually tied the game at 16-16. The teams traded points and with the match tied at 21 HSU recorded four straight points to win the game.

The second game was close throughout and again was tied at 21. The Cowgirls had the closing kick as Allison Kuster had a pair of kills in a 4-1 run to close out the game. HSU led 23-21 in the third game, but UMB rallied for four straight points to force a fourth game.

In the final game, HSU used a 10-3 run to create separation in a game that was tied at 14.

Kuster led the Cowgirls with 15 kills and she added 11 digs. Kaytlynn Lewis added a career-best 12 kills and Morgan Prince also reached double figures with 10 kills. Myra Carrion led the defense with 12 digs. Ashley Pierce had 20 assists and Rebekah Hayes added 19. Eileen Shi had 20 kills and 11 digs to pace UMB.

Game 2

The Cowgirls dropped a tightly contested nightcap 26-24, 22-25, 24-26, 25-21, 15-13 to Susquehanna University.

In the first game, Susquehanna rallied from a 24-21 deficit with five straight points to take the early lead. HSU tied the match in the second game. HSU took a 12-6 lead and maintained the lead the rest of the game in a 25-22 win.

The Cowgirls used the same formula in the third game, going ahead 12-7 and holding on down the stretch. SU tied it at 24, but the Cowgirls won the final two points to take a 2-1 lead in the match. SU then rallied back to win game four and force the deciding fifth game.

In the final set, Susquehanna went up 11-8 before the Cowgirls scored four straight points to take a 12-11 lead. After a timeout, SU then scored four of the final five points to take the win, 15-13.  

Kuster had another double-double with 12 kills and a career-best 38 digs. Prince had a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs and Pierce was the third Cowgirls with a double-double with 27 assists and 14 digs. Leecia DePaula had 22 digs.  

HSU will return to action next weekend when it plays Rhodes, Texas Lutheran, Hendrix and Birmingham Southern at the UT Tyler Tournament.
