ABILENE, Texas – Jaxon Terrell tossed a complete game as the Hardin-Simmons baseball team beat Sul Ross State 6-5 in the American Southwest Conference series opener at Hunter Field on Friday night.
Tim Johnson hit a two-run double in the third. Rains then led off the fourth inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2. Johnson had an RBI single in the fifth inning.
HSU made it 6-3 in the fifth when Hickman had an RBI bases-loaded walk and Jamie Dominguez an RBI groundout. Sul Ross State made it close in the seventh when Jorge Marquez and Johnson hit back-to-back home runs.
Terrell improved to 3-2 with the win after scattering eight hits and allowing four earned runs, while striking out seven batters.
Johnson had three hits and drove in four runs. Marquez also had three hits for the Lobos.
Sam Russell took the loss for the Lobos allowing five runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Ian Craigie, Luis Payan and Peyton Marett each worked a scoreless inning in relief for the Lobos.
Both teams are now 5-8 on the year. HSU is 4-3 in league play and Sul Ross State fell to 2-2. The teams will play at 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
