Cowboys Drop Pair To HPU

BROWNWOOD, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Howard Payne on Saturday afternoon falling, 12-11 and 9-3 in American Southwest Conference action.

Game 1

The Yellowjackets stunned the Cowboys in the first game when they scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a walkoff win.

Rylee McGee won the game for the Yellow Jackets with an RBI single. Jacob Rodriguez had a two-run double to start the scoring and Noah Payne tied the game with a three-run home run.

HSU started off strong with a four-run first inning. Jamie Dominguez had an RBI single and Tyler Bradshaw had an RBI double. Brett Hudspeth added an RBI single and Danny-David Linahan had a sacrifice fly.

HPU tied the game in the second thanks to a three-run home run by Jacob Salazar and Jacob Rodriguez followed with a solo shot.

HSU scored three times in the third on an RBI double by John Paul Tople, an RBI single by Linahan and an RBI triple by Garrett Buckner.

Hunter Garrison had an RBI single in the fourth inning and Tople an RBI single in the fifth. Salazar cut it to 9-6 when he had an RBI single and later scored on a passed ball.

Bradshaw added a two-run single in the sixth inning, before the HPU dramatics.

Hayden Clark started for the Cowboys and went four and one-third innings. Hayden Day, Justin Adams and Taylor McMackin worked for the Cowboys. Adams took the loss. Xavier Haines, the fifth HPU pitcher, earned the win with one and a third innings of scoreless relief.  

Buckner had four hits and Bradshaw and Tople had three hits each. Salazar drove in four runs for the Jackets.


Game 2

HPU jumped out to a 9-1 lead after five innings.

John Tople had an RBI single for the Cowboys in the second inning and Jacob Rains added a two-run single in the ninth.

Tople, Rains and Buckner had two hits each for HSU. Nolyn Box had three hits and drove in five runs for HPU.

Brady Roper took the loss allowing eight runs on 10 hits. Andrew Hernandez allowed just one run in two and two-third innings. Brock Bourland saw his first action of the year and struck out four batters in two scoreless innings.

Chandler Clark allowed an unearned run in five innings of work to earn the win. Graham White, Seth Owen and Brenden Clanton worked in relief.

HSU is now 18-19 on the year and 12-9 in conference play. Howard Payne clinched the right to host one of the ASC Tournament brackets and is now 25-14 overall and 16-4 in league play. The teams will close the series at 1:30 on Saturday.
