AUSTIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team extended its season with a 10-8 win over Sul Ross State in the American Southwest Conference Tournament in Austin on Friday afternoon.
The Cowboys erupted early offensively. Tyler Bradshaw had a two-run single in the first inning and John Paul Tople added a sacrifice fly. Jacob Rains had a sacrifice fly in the second inning and Brett Hudspeth had an RBI double in the third and Hunter Garrison had an RBI groundout to make it 6-0 in the third.
Sul Ross did not record a hit until the fourth inning but the Lobos scored three times in the fourth. Jacob Pool had an RBI bunt single and Andres Martinez added a two-run single.
Cade Johnson gave the Cowboys a 7-3 lead with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and the Lobos added two runs in the seventh on a Tim Johnson RBI double and a Christian York RBI single.
The Cowboys scored what proved to be three very important insurance runs in the eighth. Danny-David Linahan had a huge two-out two-run double and another run came in on an error.
The Lobos loaded the bases in the ninth with no outs. Johnson had an RBI single and Wesley Moss scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-7 and Pool had a sacrifice fly to make it 10-8 and runners remained at first and second, but Monty Maley hit a sharp grounder to Linahan at third and he went around the horn for a game-ending double play.
Hayden Clark (6-2) started for the Cowboys and went six and two-third innings for the win, allowing five runs on seven hits. Chase Buchannan got out of a jam in the seventh, worked a scoreless eighth, before allowing the first three men to reach in the ninth.
Jaxon Terrell came in and recorded his first save of the season. Aaron Marquez allowed six runs on seven hits in two innings to take the loss for Sul Ross State.
Hudspeth had three hits for the Cowboys and Rains, Linahan, Jamie Dominguez and Johnson added two hits each. Tim Johnson had three hits for the Lobos.
HSU is 19-21 on the year and snapped a seven-game losing streak. Sul Ross state finished its season with a record of 17-22.
The Cowboys will take on the loser of the East Texas Baptist-Concordia game which will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The HSU game will start at 5 p.m.
