ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team opened the season with a thrilling 86-81 overtime victory over Texas Lutheran on Friday night at the Mabee Complex.
Both teams showed some first-game jitters and some cold shooting led to a 25-23 Texas Lutheran lead at halftime.
In the second half, both teams heated up from the floor. The Cowboys shot 59.4 percent in the second half and TLU shot 55.6 percent.
TLU had a 45-39 lead with 12:57 to play and the Cowboys went on a 9-2 run to take a 48-47 lead on a Ricky Edwards layup after a Chase Cobb steal. The Cowboys had their biggest lead of the game with 4:55 to play when Keenan Holdman hit a layup to make it 65-58.
The Bulldogs eventually tied the game on a pair of free throws by Caleb Lister with :32 to play and then the Cowboys could not get off a shot and TLU had a chance at a game winner but Edwards came up with a steal to send the game to overtime.
Kyle Brennon scored the first eight points of overtime to give HSU an 83-75 lead and the Bulldogs chipped away but were never able to get closer than two points the rest of the way.
HSU had a decided advantage in the paint as they outscored TLU 38-22. HSU also had a 26-3 advantage in bench scoring.
Sebastian Andrade had 33 points and 12 rebounds for Texas Lutheran and Jorden Kite added 24 points.
The Cowboys will play Schreiner on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Mabee Complex.
