ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team opened its 2015 fall camp with 164 players on a near perfect sun-drenched 100-degree afternoon at Shelton Stadium.
"The first day is always exciting, you have a lot of guys that have done this two or three or four times and then you have a big group with some wide eyes," said head coach Jesse Burleson. "We try to throw a lot of install at them both offensively and defensively and see how they react. We don't slow down it is up to our older guys and our coaches to get the young guys up to speed and they adjust really quickly."
"I was happy with the way our guys got after it, the intensity, the communication, we seemed to pick right up where we left off in the spring with some of our older guys and that is a product having the same staff for two years in a row. We have a lot of work to do in a short time before we play right here on Sept. 5 against Southwestern."
The Cowboys return nine starters on defense that have combined for 145 career starts, including six senior starters.
"We have high expectations for ourselves as a defense and as a team," said senior captain James Place. "We have been building for this and it is on us to have the type of the season we know we can have. We have a lot of experience and we have each other's backs. We know the expectations and trust me no one has higher expectations than us seniors."
"We are excited. We have worked extremely hard since the end of last year and we are blessed to get to go out and show what we can do," said Sloan.
HSU is coming off a 6-3 season and has been ranked as high as No. 11 in one preseason national poll. The Cowboys open the season Sept. 5 against Southwestern.
