Cowboys Record Big Homecoming Win Over Howard Payne
ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons moved to 7-0 with a 63-7 homecoming and American Southwest Conference win over Howard Payne on Saturday afternoon at a soggy Shelton Stadium.

The Cowboys had a complete performance in all three phases. HSU rolled up 525 yards of offense, held the Yellowjackets to 265 yards and returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns.

Reese Childress put the Cowboys on the board when HSU took the opening drive and went 63 yards in nine plays. Childress scored from nine yards out on a run. HSU forced a quick punt and Jessie Ramos scored on a 64-yard pass from Ryan Breton.

Another punt by the Jackets gave HSU the ball back and Ramos scored on a 14-yard pass from Breton to make it 21-0 with 1:15 to play in the first quarter.

Kerry Sloan made it 28-0 with a 9-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. Ramos struck again as he and Breton hooked up on a 72-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing possession, Kylon Mills intercepted a Richard Young pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown to make it 42-0 just before halftime.  

Ramos scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Breton early in the third quarter to end his day with seven catches for 193 yards and a career-best four touchdowns.

Reggie Davis made it 56-0 with a 67-yard interception return. Luke Bishop scored on a 13-yard run to make it 63-0 with :41 to play in the third quarter. HPU scored its lone points on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Caisson Montiet to Colten Hearrell with 9:35 to play.

Breton hit 11-of-21 passes for 248 yards and four scores. Matthew Hawkins led the defense with 11 tackles.

HSU improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in ASC play. HPU fell to 0-7 and 0-2 in conference action. The Cowboys will host Mary Hardin-Baylor in a matchup of two nationally-ranked unbeaten teams.
 

Game Notes

  • The Cowboys pushed its winning streak to seven games, the longest since an undefeated regular season in 2004, the last time the Cowboys beat UMHB and also the last time HSU won the ASC title.
  • Ramos tied his career-high with four touchdown receptions. He has 37 career touchdowns.
  • HSU is 42-13-5 all-time on homecoming.
  • HSU is 39-24-4 all-time against Howard Payne and have won eight straight meetings.
  • Jaquan Hemphill (true freshman from Coleman) and Jalen Garza (redshirt freshman from Anson) saw their first career varsity action, they are both former Big Country Players of the Year.
  • HSU has nine non-offensive scores this year.
