Cowboys Ranked First In Initial NCAA South Region Rankings
INDIANPOLIS – Hardin-Simmons' football team was ranked first in the south region in the initial NCAA regional rankings, which determine who goes to the NCAA Playoffs.

The Cowboys are first, followed by Johns Hopkins, Mary Hardin-Baylor, Thomas More, Washington and Lee, Moravian, Guilford, Huntingdon, Texas Lutheran and Maryville.

HSU is the only team in the region with a pair of wins over regionally ranked teams.

The Division III playoff structure features 25 automatic bids from conference champions, one Pool B bid and six Pool C selections.

HSU is in the running for what is called Pool B, since it plays in the American Southwest Conference – a non-automatic bid league. Conferences must have seven teams to earn an automatic bid and with McMurry and Belhaven in the process of reclassifying to Division III, the ASC only has six team.

Pool C is for teams that are not an automatic qualifier and also for teams in pool B that are not selected as the one Pool B participant.

The bracket is a national bracket and teams can be placed in any region the committee deems necessary to fill out the bracket, so regions are not guaranteed a certain number of teams from their regional pool.
