Cowboys Picked Second In ASC Preseason Poll

RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team was picked to finish second in the American Southwest Conference preseason poll of the league's head coaches and sports information directors.

Hardin-Simmons senior running back Jaquan Hemphill was named the preseason offensive player of the year. Joey Longoria of Mary Hardin-Baylor was the preseason honoree on the defensive side of the ball and Juan Ocampo was the preseason special teams player of the year.

Hemphill was the 2017 ASC Offensive Player of the Year when he ran for 1,028 yards and 14 touchdowns with 317 yards and three scores receiving. Last year Hemphill rushed 60 times for 675 yards (11.2 per carry) and nine touchdowns in three games plus one series before missing the rest of 2018 with an injury.

Mary Hardin-Baylor was the preseason pick to win the league. The Cru received 19 of the 20 first-place votes and 199 total points. The Cowboys received the other first-place vote and had 179 points. East Texas Baptist was a distant third with 148 points.

Texas Lutheran is picked fourth with 138 points, Southwestern was fifth in the poll with 127 points, Louisiana College is sixth with 106 points. The final four teams were separated by seven points. Howard Payne was picked seventh with 53, Belhaven and Sul Ross State tied for eighth with 52 points and McMurry finished last with 46 points.

HSU will open the season on Sept. 7 in Alpine against Sul Ross State.
