Cowboys Open Play At UMHB Crusader Intercollegiate

TEMPLE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's golf team had a tough opening round at the Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusader Intercollegiate at the par-72 Wildflower Country Club in Temple.

The Cowboys shot a 324 in the opening round and are in 11th place. Concordia leads the event after shooting a 298. Mary Hardin-Baylor and St. Thomas are tied for second place at 310.

Veterans Matt Jouett and Nick Vella each shot 77 to lead the Cowboys in the first round. Canyon Winters (85), Mason Ketcherside (85) and Robert Quintana (86) all shot rounds in the 80s on a hot windy day.

Mateo Gavilanes of Concordia shot a three-under-par 69 to lead the medalist race by one shot over Kyle Anderson of Howard Payne.

The teams will play 18 holes on Tuesday to conclude the tournament.
