RICHARDSON, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team won its second straight American Southwest Conference title with a 2-0 win over Texas-Dallas on Sunday afternoon at the UTD Soccer Complex in Richardson.
"I couldn't be more proud of this group, they have fought through injuries all season," said Dan Heger. "We haven't played the same lineup very many times this season but they kept finding a way to get it done. We have a special group of guys and they earned it.
Matt Pitcock gave the Cowboys the lead with his fourth goal of the tournament at the 16:45 mark. He scored off a Tanner Coffin throw-in that was flicked by Dustin Beal to Pitcock. Pitcock was named the tournament MVP.
It was fitting for him as he missed last season with a torn ACL and missed his chance to get a conference title a year ago. He has 10 goals on the season.
HSU converted another set piece just 1:12 into the second half to make it 2-0. Ewa Coleman scored the goal.
UTD had 21 shots in the game to just eight for HSU but only four of the UTD shots were on target.
Michael Vargas worked the shutout with three saves.
It was the third meeting between the two teams this season, all three in Richardson. In the first meeting the two teams played a scoreless draw. UTD won on an overtime penalty kick late in the second game 1-0 and HSU won the conference title. It was the ninth ASC title for the Cowboys.
HSU is now 9-4-2 and will find out on Monday where it opens the NCAA Tournament. UTD is 13-4-3 on the year.
Pitcock was the MVP and J.P. Lowenthal, Ewa Coleman and Taylor Jackson were also named to the all-tournament team.
