Cowboys Fall On Penalty Kick In Second OT
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team came up just short against No. 7 Brandeis, falling 2-1 on a penalty kick in the 105th minute in the season opener on Friday afternoon at Paul McGinlay Field in San Antonio.

The Cowboys scored early when senior Tanner Coffin found fellow senior Dustin Beal in the box and he headed it home for a 1-0 lead at the 5:33 mark.

The match changed when HSU sophomore Danny Benyamin picked up a red card at the 25:27 mark of the first half that made the Cowboys play a man down for the final 78:55 of the game.

The Judges tied the game in the 38th minute on a Chris Bradley goal. It remained tied until the Cowboys picked up a foul in the box in the second overtime and Josh Ocel ended the game by hitting the penalty kick.

  • It was the first meeting between the two teams.
  • Brandeis went to the Elite Eight a year ago and is ranked seventh in the preseason.
  • HSU has lost a one-goal game in each of the last three season openers.
  • Beal's goal was the 11th of his career all on set pieces. He is a defender for the Cowboys.
  • Michael Vargas had seven saves for the Cowboys on the day.
  • Brandeis outshot the Cowboys 23-6 overall and 9-3 on goal.


HSU fell to 0-1 and Brandeis improved to 2-0 on the year.

The Cowboys turn around and play Claremont Mudd Scripps on Saturday at 6 p.m.
