Vargas Breaks Record As Cowboys Clinch Postesason Berth
ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team has been knocked down most of the season with injuries to key players, but the resilient Cowboys came up with a 1-0 win over East Texas Baptist on Friday afternoon at the HSU Soccer Complex to clinch a berth into the American Southwest Conference Tournament next weekend.

The Cowboys came into the weekend in sixth place in the ASC standings and needed one win to secure a berth in the postseason. HSU has won two straight ASC titles and now have a chance to make it three in a row.

Cole Johnson gave the Cowboys all the scoring they would need when he got loose in the fifth minute on a nice pass from Tristan Huber. Johnson scored his third goal of the season.

From there on out the Cowboys turned to their defense and it worked as the Tigers had eight shots on the day but none were close range scoring threats. Junior Michael Vargas recorded the shutout in goal for the Cowboys and broke the school record with his 23rd shutout of his career. He had five saves in the match.

HSU outshot the Tigers 14-8 overall and 7-5 on goal. Tiger goalkeeper Juan Perales made three one on one saves in the game and had six saves overall.
HSU is now 7-5-2 overall and 4-3-1 in ASC action. East Texas Baptist fell to 2-13-1 and 2-6-1 in ASC play.
The Cowboys will host LeTourneau at 3 p.m. for senior day. HSU will honor Dustin Beal, Junior Crawford and Isaiah Longoria in their final home game.
