GEORGETOWN, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team responded from its first loss since 2009 with a 4-0 win over Southwestern on Tuesday afternoon in Georgetown.
The Cowgirls dominated the game from the outset and took an early 1-0 lead when Katie Kuykendall found a streaking Taylor Thigpen for a goal at the 7:59 mark. The Cowgirls had the play but had trouble finishing the rest of the half and it was 1-0 at halftime. HSU outshot Southwestern 7-0 in the first half.
HSU found its scoring touch in the second half. HSU outshot Southwestern 22-0 in the second half and 29-0 in the game.
The Cowgirls converted a corner kick into a goal when Kuykendall found Courtney Cramer on the near post and she sent it home just 4:32 into the second half. Devon Howard picked up a loose ball in the box and finished it for a 3-0 lead with 61:14 to play.
The Cowgirls (1-1) will play regionally-ranked California Lutheran at 5 p.m. at the HSU Soccer Complex. It will be the first home game since the Cowgirls won the NCAA title last December. Southwestern fell to 1-1-1 with the loss.
