ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team won the first round of the American Southwest Conference Tournament on Tuesday 4-0 against the Concordia University Tornados.
The Cowgirls will advance to play in the semifinal match on Friday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at the HSU Soccer Complex in Abilene.
Mackensie Moreno opened the scoring with a goal in the 13th minute after Michaela Sabrsula and Taylor Bernal worked the ball across the box for the backpost finish. Bernal added the second Cowgirl goal burning the Tornado defense after a through ball sent by Madelyn Dowell in the 36th minute.
In the 58th minute, Dowell placed a free kick for another Bernal goal with the tap in. Hayden Abor got free in the 70th minute and finished across the net after another Dowell assist, her third of the game in the Cowgirl 4-0 victory.
The Cowgirls had 23 shots and 15 on goal. The Tornados had four shots and three on target in the match. The Cowgirls led with nine corner kicks to none for Concordia.
Haley Foley started in goal for the Cowgirls and had three saves in the win. Tornado keeper Sofie Gomez had an incredible effort with 11 saves on the night.
The Cowgirls improve to 15-2-1 on the season as they advance to the ASC Semifinal match. Concordia ends its season 4-15. The Cowgirls will play in the ASC Semifinal match on Friday at 1 p.m. at the HSU Soccer Complex against the winner of the McMurry-LeTourneau quarterfinal game.
