Cowgirls Comeback to Claim Spot in ASC Championship

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team came from behind to win 2-1 against the McMurry War Hawks on Friday at the HSU Soccer Complex in the American Southwest Conference Tournament semifinal match.

McMurry came out strong and scored in the 16th minute with a Sky Reynolds goal off a Calista Flores assist to make it 1-0 War Hawks. The Cowgirls battled back and Randie Dennison served a ball in to Taylor Bernal who scored the tying goal in the 60th minute making it 1-1.

The Cowgirls had a set piece with under a minute to go but were fouled inside the box in the process and awarded a penalty kick. Madelyn Dowell scored the PK in the 89th minute to clinch the win 2-1 for the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls will play in the ASC Championship game at the HSU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon against Mary-Hardin Baylor.

The Cowgirls had 11 shots and three on frame in the contest and the War Hawks had five shots with one on goal. The Cowgirls had six corners to McMurry's two.

Haley Foley started at keeper for the Cowgirls and Cindy Villasana started in goal for McMurry with one save. Jordan Gregory also saw time in the net for the War Hawks.

The Cowgirls move to 16-2-1 on the season and McMurry exits the ASC Tournament at 11-4-6. The Cowgirls will host the ASC Championship game against Mary-Hardin Baylor on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.
