Cowgirls Split on Opening Day

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team split the first two games of the season on Friday, falling 11-1 to Schreiner University and winning 12-3 over Austin College at Ellis Field.

The Schreiner Mountaineers went up 3-0 in the top of the first. The Cowgirls were able to load the bases in their half of the first but were kept scoreless. The rest of the game would see more of the same, with the Cowgirls ending with eight runners left on base in the loss.

Kaycee Koiner managed the only RBI for the Cowgirls with a sacrifice fly. Sidney Cox led the Cowgirls with a pair of hits and a walk against Schreiner. For the Mountaineers, Kennedy Moody had three hits and four RBIs.

Camille Scott started on the mound for the Cowgirls against Austin College and threw seven innings allowing five hits and three runs in the win. She also had five strikeouts and only two walks.

Kate Tovar led the Cowgirls with three doubles on four total hits. Cox, Scott, and Kaitlin Ammermann all had two hits. Cassidy McDaris led the Kangaroos with two hits and one run scored.  

The Cowgirls head into the weekend with a 1-1 record and will play host to Millsaps College on Saturday at 12 noon on Ellis Field, followed by another game with Schreiner at 2 p.m.
