GEORGETOWN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball lost to games at Southwestern on Saturday, 3-2 in game one and 19-2 in game two.
The Cowgirls led in game one 2-0 until a three-run inning by the Pirates in the bottom of the sixth to give them the 3-2 lead they would hold for the win.
Gabby Ortega pitched all of game one for the Cowgirls with two earned runs allowed in the loss. Lindsay Longuet got the win for Southwestern with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed.
Four Cowgirls had a hit to share the team lead, Kate Tovar and Karis Hessert with doubles, and Ortega reached twice with two walks and scored a run. For the Pirates, Tori Montemayor hast two hits with a double and an RBI.
Game two was unfortunate for the Cowgirls who allowed 21 hits to their opponent leading to 19 runs.
Positives for the Cowgirls in game two included a Sidney Cox double and a Tovar homerun late.
Southwestern started Bailey Meyer in the circle who allowed four hits and had five strikeouts in the win. Kylie Nixon had a Wendy's 4-for-4 in game two including a pair of doubles and four RBIs.
The Cowgirls record moves to 13-12 and they will look to rebound next weekend when they return home where they are 10-3 this season. They will host Louisiana College in American Southwest Conference play for a three-game series starting Friday at 3 p.m. at Ellis Field in Abilene.
