ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team fell to Louisiana College 8-3 on Friday afternoon in the first game of a three-game American Southwest Conference series.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first after a Shelby Bergeron leadoff triple shortly followed by an Abby Sterling home run. The Cowgirls got one back in the first with a Kate Tovar double and a Karis Hessert single to score, making it 3-1 LC.
Briley Johnston led off the second inning with another Wildcat triple and later scored to make it 4-1 LC. The Cowgirls tacked on their second run with a promising start to the third inning with three straight hits capped off by a Ka. Hessert double to make it 4-2.
The Cowgirls had runners at second and third with no outs but failed to score any more in the third and the score remained 4-2. The Cowgirls had a few late errors to give up a total of eight Wildcat runs and the team was unable to beat the deficit and lost by a final of 8-3.
Gabby Ortega started for the Cowgirls and settled down after a tough first inning. She pitched five innings and only gave up four earned runs due to four Cowgirl errors in the loss.
Sarah Gartman started for Louisiana College and went seven innings with three runs allowed on nine hits and had nine strikeouts.
Ka. Hessert and Tovar both had a pair of hits with a double each to lead the Cowgirls. Three Wildcats had two hits and Abby Sterling led in RBIs with three.
The Cowgirls move to 13-13 on the season and 8-5 in the ASC while Louisiana College improves to 18-8 and 9-7 in conference. The series continues with a doubleheader tomorrow with games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
