MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team split games on Friday in the ASC Softball Tournament hosted by ETBU, losing 5-0 to ETBU and then getting the comeback win 8-7 against LeTourneau.
The Cowgirls slipped into the elimination side of the bracket after dropping their first game to ETBU.
Beatriz Lara pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the ETBU Tigers to get the win.
The elimination game Friday afternoon was against LeTourneau, a team the Cowgirls had not seen all season.
The Cowgirls got off to a hot start with four runs in the first two innings. The Yellow Jackets fought their way back with two in the third and exploded for five more runs in the fourth to make it 7-5 Jackets.
Kaitlin Ammermann hit a solo-shot home run in the sixth to make it a 7-6 Jacket lead. In the top of the seventh, Kate Tovar legged out an infield single and was driven home with a Kenzee Hessert two-run homer well out of left to take the lead 8-7 in the final inning.
The Cowgirls would hold that lead to get the win 8-7 over LeTourneau and earn a spot for the Cowgirls in Saturday's ASC Tournament schedule.
Tovar led the Cowgirls with three hits and Ammermann led with three RBIs. Camille Scott got the start and Gabby Ortega and Taylor Hinojos also pitched, Hinojos getting the win off the last-inning Cowgirl go-ahead homer.
The Cowgirls will play Mary-Hardin Baylor at 11 A.M. on Saturday morning in an elimination game. The winner will move on to the championship series, needing to beat ETBU twice per the double-elimination tournament standards.
