SHERMAN, Texas — It was a reunion day of sorts in Sherman
as Hardin-Simmons swept a pair of teams that used to be American
Southwest Conference foes in the first day of the Austin College
Invitational, Friday evening in Sherman.
The Cowgirls swept the University of Dallas, 25-15, 25-17 and
25-16 and turned right around and beat host Austin College 25-21,
25-22, 25-22. It snaps a painful 13-match losing streak to Austin
College. The Kangaroos have been a perennial Top 25 team and have
been in and out of the rankings this season.
During the streak, the Cowgirls lost to the Kangaroos in an ASC
Championship match and in the NCAA Tournament. AC fell to 21-8 on
the year and the Cowgirls improved to 19-5. The University of
Dallas is now 11-16 on the year.
In the UD match, freshman outside hitter Madison Reyes recorded 12
kills and Kaela Parnell added 10 kills and Erin Davis had 20
assists.
Against AC, Parnell had 15 kills to lead the Cowgirls. Chelsie
Fowler added 12 and Reyes had 10 kills to move her streak to nine
straight matches with double-digit kills. Sam Lucien had 29 assists
at setter. Gracen Harris led a stingy defense with 20 digs and the
Cowgirls had 8.5 blocks in the match.
HSU will play 13th-ranked Southwestern on Saturday at 10 a.m. in
their only match of the day. They were scheduled to play Arlington
Baptist, but ABC pulled out of the tournament at the last
minute.
