What We Do

HSU Sports Medicine is a team of healthcare providers comprised of Athletic Trainers (ATS) and Physicians.  Our mission is "Caring for Champions through professional excellence", and we seek to provide competent, evidence-based, patient-centered care.  We are trained in five major domains of clinical practice including Prevention, Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis, Immediate and Emergency Care, Treatment and Rehabilitation, as well as Organization and Professional Health and Well-Being.  We provide a comprehensive continuum of care that ranges from orthopedic injuries and conditions to general medical conditions and illness.  Concussion recognition and management and environmental injuries and emergencies are also heavily emphasized within our scope of practice.

All ATs hold state licensure through the Texas Department of State Health Services as well as national certification through the Board of Certification. Our Physicians represent a wide range of specialties relevant to Sports Medicine including Orthopedic Surgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Primary Care Sports Medicine. HSU Sports Medicine provides medical coverage to 18 Intercollegiate Athletic Teams as well as four Auxiliary Programs including HSU Cycling, HSU Cheer, the HSU Spurs Dance Team and the Six White Horse Riders Equestrian Program at Hardin-Simmons University.

There are three Sports Medicine Clinics on the campus of Hardin-Simmons University.  Each clinic serves specific teams and patient loads and is properly equipped with the necessary treatment and rehabilitation equipment needed to achieve excellent patient care. Medical record keeping is an integral part of HSU Sports Medicine, and we utilize SportsWare Online Electronic Medical Record Software which houses all pertinent medical information for each student-athlete.

In addition to clinical responsibilities within HSU Sports Medicine, our professional staff serve as Clinical Preceptors within the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) for various universities including HSU, ACU, and Tarleton. Our Pre-Professional Student Staff is an integral part of the delivery of quality healthcare to our student-athletes and are mentored and guided in their clinical interactions. Together, the professional and pre-professional staff provide patient-centered care and practice Evidence-Based Medicine as it relates to Athletic Training.

Facilities

HSU is fortunate to have three fully operational Sports Medicine Clinics on our campus. These clinics are where HSU Sports Medicine's day-to-day care is provided. All Clinics are fully equipped with all of the necessary treatment and rehab equipment, including therapeutic modalities such as Cryotherapy, Electrotherapy, a host of thermal physical agents including Therapeutic Ultrasound. Rehabilitation equipment includes stationary bikes, ellipticals, as well as the TRX Suspension System.

Sandefer Sports Medicine Clinic

Constructed in 1990, the Sandefer Clinic is housed in the Jake Sandefer Athletic Field House. The Sandefer Clinic is home to 1,230 square feet of treatment and rehabilitation space. The Director of Athletic Training Services and Head Athletic Trainer also offices in this clinic. Care is primarily provided to football, baseball, and golf in the Sandefer Clinic; however, all HSU Sports Medicine Staff members utilize the Sandefer Clinic on an as needed basis.

The Mabee Clinic
Expanded in 2010, the Mabee Clinic serves as the primary clinic for our volleyball, men's and women's basketball, and tennis teams, as well as HSU cheer and the HSU Spurs dance team.

The Grape Street Clinic
Our newest clinic, the Grape Street Clinic was completed in 2008. Care is primarily provided to men's and women's soccer, cross country, track and field, as well as softball through the Grape Street Clinic.
