MARSHALL, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
baseball team swept a doubleheader from East Texas Baptist, 15-9
and 12-1, in American Southwest Conference crossover action in
Marshall on Saturday.
HSU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first on a Regan Dixon RBI triple
and a Taylor Berlin RBI double in the top of the first. In the
second inning Brian Weeks had an RBI sacrifice fly.
ETBU scored three runs in the first and four more in the second to
chase starter Will Burke.
HSU chipped away at the 7-3 deficit with a run in the third on a
Jaxon Jordan bases loaded walk. HSU scored two more runs in the
fourth with a J.T. Armstrong sacrifice fly and a Sam Walker RBI
single to left.
ETBU added a run in the fourth and then Jordan led off the fifth
with a home run to right field. HSU tied the game in the sixth on a
Kevin Ellison two-out RBI single to left.
In the eighth inning (it was scheduled for seven), the Cowboys
scored seven runs on four hits, two errors two walks and a hit
batter. Regan Dixon had a three-run home run in the inning, Brian
Weeks had an RBI single and the Cowboys scored on a passed ball,
error and bases loaded walk in the inning.
Weeks, Dixon and Sam Walker each had three hits for the Cowboys.
Kyle Barton earned the win with three innings of relief work.
Tim Kriegel (1-2) pitched all seven innings and scattered six hits
to earn the win on the mound for the Cowboys in the nightcap.
HSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Weeks
led off the game with a triple and scored on a Matt Roam single to
center. After an out, Armstrong, Sam Walker and James Gage all
walked to force in a run. Joey Dearing then had a two run single
and Jordan had an RBI single to right. Kevin Ellison had an RBI
groundout and Weeks had an RBI double.
HSU added an unearned run in the second when Walker walked, stole
second and scored on an error by the centerfielder. Dixon had a
two-run double in the fifth inning. ETBU scored its lone run in the
fifth on a single followed by a double.
The Cowboys added a single run in the sixth when Gage doubled to
lead off the inning and Dearing drove him in with a single to left
center. Dixon had a solo home run in the seventh.
Weeks was 3-for-5 and Dixon and Joey Dearing each had two hits and
three RBIs.
The Cowboys evened their record at 4-4. ETBU fell to 5-4. HSU plays
at Texas-Tyler on Tuesday.
