LONGVIEW, Texas - Matt Roam went 5-for-5 and
drove in three runs to propel the Hardin-Simmons baseball team to a
10-9 win over LeTourneau on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference
action at Conrad Vernon Field in Longview.
The Cowboys fell behind 5-0 after the second inning. The
Yellowjackets manufactured a run in the first and then scored four
in the second inning. Cowboy starter Skylar Sillivent walked the
first two batters and then had a throwing error on the next batter.
He then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed a run to score.
After a strike out, Nathan Tomaszewski had a two-run single.
Sillivent hit the next batter to end his day and Zach Stephens came
on in relief. Nick Mihalco then had a RBI double.
HSU put a pair of runs on the board in the second. Kevin Ellison
led off with a walk and was erased on a Brian Weeks fielder's
choice. Weeks came around to score on a Roam double. Regan Dixon
followed with an RBI single to center.
The Cowboys added five runs in the fourth to take a 6-5
lead. With one out, Jaxon Jordan, Mike Morgan Joey Dearing and
Ellison had consecutive singles. Ellison's single scored Jordan and
Morgan also scored on a throwing error on the play. Weeks followed
with a sacrifice fly and Roam had an RBI single. Dixon had an
infield single and J.T. Armstrong had an RBI single.
LeTourneau retook the lead in the fourth on a two-run home run
by Josh Brown. HSU scored two more runs in the sixth inning
on RBI singles by Armstrong and Jordan. Ed Hurta led off the sixth
inning with a home run and Josh Walker had an RBI single later in
the inning to tie the game at 9-9.
HSU scored what turned out to be the winning run in the seventh
inning. Morgan led off the inning with a walk and moved to second
on a sac bunt by Dearing. After a fly out, Weeks reached on an
error and Morgan moved to third. Roam then singled home Morgan.
HSU then went to the bullpen to close out the game. Will Burke
worked a 1-2-3 seventh and Kyle Barton did the same in the eighth.
Barton hit the leadoff man in the ninth, but worked around it to
earn his third save of the season.
Stephens worked four and two-third innings to earn the win. He
allowed four runs on 10 hits.
HSU is now 5-5 on the year and LeTourneau fell to 3-4. HSU will
play a weekend crossover series with Ozarks, beginning Friday at 7
p.m. at Hunter Field.
