ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' baseball team won its fourth
straight game as the Cowboys swept a doubleheader from Ozarks, 8-2
and 3-2 in American Southwest Conference crossover action Saturday
at Hunter Field in Abilene.
The Cowboys started relief ace Kyle Barton in the first game and
he threw all seven innings, allowing only four hits and two runs to
move his record to 2-0 on the year. It was his first start of the
season.
Barton allowed only one hit and no runs through the first four
innings. In the fifth he hit leadoff batter Scott Dietz and Andrew
Teaster followed with a triple to score a run. Teaster scored on a
groundout and Barton did not allow any runs after that.
HSU put five runs on the board in the bottom of the second
inning. Sam Walker reached on an error to lead off the inning and
Taylor Berlin followed with an infield single. James Gage had a
sacrifice bunt to put the runners at second and third and Mike
Morgan walked to load the bases. Kevin Ellison then knocked in the
first run with a fielder's choice. Brian Weeks followed with an RBI
single and Matt Roam had a two-run single through the right side.
Regan Dixon added an RBI single.
Roam had a two-run single in the third to push the HSU lead to
7-0. The Cowboys scored a run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.
Roam had two hits and drove in four runs for the Cowboys in the
game.
HSU jumped on the board with a run in the bottom of the first of
the second game. Weeks singled and Roam followed with a single
through the right side. Walker had a sacrifice bunt and Armstrong
followed with a double to center to score Weeks.
HSU added to the lead in the third with another run. Weeks led
off with a single and moved to second on a Roam sacrifice bunt.
Weeks moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Armstrong
single to right.
Ozarks used a double followed by a Freddie Flores RBI single to
score a run in the top of the fourth and HSU answered with a single
run in the bottom of the fourth. James Gage reached on an error and
moved to second on a Mike Morgan sacrifice bunt. Jaxon Jordan then
singled Gage home with a single to right.
In the top of the sixth, Ozarks used a Todd Koch double to knock
in Corey Briggs who led off being hit by a pitch.
Cowboy starter Tim Kriegel (2-2) went the distance for the
Cowboys. He allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out 11. Bruce
Cameron threw a complete game for Ozarks as well, allowing only
three runs and seven hits.
Weeks, Roam and Armstrong each had two hits for the Cowboys and
Armstrong drove in a pair of runs.
HSU has now won four games in a row to improve its record to
9-5. Ozarks fell to 3-9 on the year. HSU hosts Wayland Baptist on
Tuesday.
