ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons baseball team
dropped its season opener 23-10 in run-rule fashion to the
University of the Southwest at Hunter Field in Abilene.
With a wind blowing 35 mile per hour it turned Hunter Field into
a launching pad as the teams combined for nine home runs in an
offensive slugfest.
The Cowboys got off to a good start as Regan Dixon singled home
a couple of runs in the first inning. It was a brief lead as USW
scored eight runs in the second inning and never trailed again.
Will Burke (0-1) was the first of five Cowboy pitchers in the
seven inning game. Burke allowed eight runs on eight hits in three
and one-third innings of work in his HSU debut.
Michael Reinhardt, Taylor Berlin and Zach Stephens all saw the
mound for the Cowboys.
HSU hit five home runs in the game - Matt Roam hit a three-run
shot and Brian Weeks, James Gage, Dixon and Berlin all had solo
shots. Roam and Dixon had three RBIs each and Dixon and Gage each
had three hits.
HSU will play Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
