ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons'
baseball team had give up a four-run lead in the top of the ninth
inning, but rallied with two solo home runs in the bottom of the
ninth for a 12-11 American Southwest Conference win over Schreiner,
Friday night at Hunter Field.
HSU led 10-6 going into the ninth inning, but Schreiner took
advantage of an error to score five unearned runs, including a
grand slam by Joe Andrew Pena to give the Mountaineers a 11-10
lead.
HSU showed its resolve when Matt Roam hit a towering home run to
left field on the first pitch of the ninth to tie the game at 11.
After an out, J.T. Armstrong went with an 0-2 fastball that was off
the plate and drove it over the right field wall for the walk-off
winner.
The Cowboys scored their first three runs in unusual fashion. In
the bottom of the first, Brian Weeks was on third and Armstrong on
first. Armstrong took off early from first and Schreiner starter
Roger Ayala had started his motion, stopped and was called for a
balk. In the third, Weeks doubled to lead off the third and moved
to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Matt Roam then struck out but
the pitch was in the dirt when Pena threw to first for the out,
Weeks raced home with a run.
In the fourth inning the Cowboys moved the lead to 6-2 with four
runs. Taylor Berlin walked, James Gage followed with a single and
Jaxon Jordan hit a ball to right that was lost in the lights it
landed harmlessly in the outfield and Berlin scored to make it 3-2.
Bryan Blare then came up with a two-run single to left field and
Weeks had a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.
Schreiner scored three runs in the fifth to make it 6-5. J.D.
Escobar had a two-run double in the fifth then he came around to
score when the Cowboys threw the ball away on a relay.
Armstrong had a two-run home run in the seventh and Mike Morgan
had a solo home run in the eighth for the Cowboys.
Kyle Barton moved to 5-0 with the win in relief. He allowed five
unearned runs in the ninth and struck out six batters in two and
one-third innings of work. Sam Walker went six and two-third
innings for the Cowboys, allowing six runs (five earned). Eric
Wehmeyer (0-1) took the loss for Schreiner.
Armstrong, Weeks, Roam, James Gage and Blare all had two hits for
the Cowboys in a 13-hit attack. Escobar had four hits to pace
Schreiner.
HSU is now 4-3 in league play and 12-10 overall. Schreiner fell to
12-10 and 5-2 in league play. The teams will play a 1 p.m.
doubleheader on Saturday at Hunter Field.
