ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
baseball team rallied from a 5-1 deficit for a 10-7 win over
Manchester (Ind.), Wednesday afternoon in nonconference at Hunter
Field in Abilene.
Manchester jumped out to the 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth
inning off of Cowboy starter Taylor Berlin. He allowed a Ty Foster
RBI triple and a sacrifice fly in the first inning to give up two
runs. With two outs in the third, he allowed a single that was
immediately followed by a two-run home run by Foster. Matty Miller
had a solo home run in the fifth. Other than those three pitches he
was very solid and allowed just six hits over his five innings of
work.
Regan Dixon hit his 10th home run of the season in the first
inning, but it was the bottom of the fifth inning that got the
Cowboys on top. Michael Morgan led off the inning with a single and
with one out Kevin Ellison singled to center. Brian Weeks followed
with an RBI single and then Matt Roam flew out. Manchester should
have been out of the inning, but Miller misplayed a Regan Dixon
ball that allowed a run to score. J.T. Armstrong came up next and
hit a three-run home run to make it 6-5.
HSU pushed the lead to 9-5 with three runs in the sixth. Jaxon
Jordan led off the inning by reaching on an error. Morgan sacrifice
bunted him to second and Joey Dearing had an RBI single. After a
groundout, Weeks walked and Roam reached on another error. Dixon
made the Spartans pay again with a two-run single to center.
Manchester added a pair of runs in the seventh on a two-run single
by John Smolinski. HSU added a run in the seventh on another
Dearing RBI single.
Michael Reinhardt came on in the seventh inning with the bases
loaded and got the final out of the inning on a groundout. He then
worked a scoreless eighth and ninth inning for his first career
save.
Dixon, Jordan and Dearing each had two hits for the Cowboys. Dixon
had three RBIs, Armstrong had the three-run home run and Dearing
had a pair of RBI singles.
HSU is now 14-11 on the year and Manchester fell to 7-9. HSU will
play at Concordia at 1 p.m. on Friday in ASC action.
