AUSTIN, Texas — Sam Walker went seven plus innings and
Kyle Barton recorded his fifth save of the year as Hardin-Simmons
baseball team defeated Concordia, 5-2, in American Southwest
Conference action, Saturday night at Nelson Field in Austin.
The Cowboys scored a run in the first inning. Brian Weeks led off
by getting on by a error and he immediately scored on a RBI triple
by Matt Roam.
HSU scored two runs in the fourth inning. Taylor Berlin led off
the inning with a single and James Gage followed with a double to
put runners on second and third. Michael Morgan then came up with a
one-out double to make it 3-0.
HSU made it 4-0 in the sixth with a single run. Gage led off with
a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jaxon Jordan and
scored on a Kevin Ellison single.
Chad Thielpape had a solo home run in the sixth for Concordia to
make it 4-1. HSU added a run in the seventh when Regan Dixon had a
one-out single that got through the centerfielder and he made it to
third base. He scored on a J.T. Armstrong groundout. Concordia
scored a run in the eighth to make it 5-2, before Barton came on
and struck out the final two batters of the inning with two runners
on base.
Walker went seven plus innings and allowed just two runs and Kyle
Barton got the last six outs of the game for his fifth save. Matt
Coburn (3-4) went seven innings and struck out 14 in the game for
Concordia. He allowed five runs.
The Cowboys are now 15-11 on the year and 6-4 in ASC play.
Concordia falls to 15-15 overall and to 4-6 in league play. The
teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
