ABILENE, Texas -
Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split with crosstown rival McMurry
Saturday, falling 15-9 in the first game and winning 15-13 the
second in American Southwest Conference action at Hunter Field.
The Cowboys held off McMurry in the nightcap behind relief ace
Kyle Barton. The Cowboys scored a run in every inning but the sixth
inning, but still trailed 8-7 heading into the bottom of the
seventh.
HSU then exploded for four runs in the seventh, thanks in part
to a huge error. Jaxon Jordan led off with a single and James Gage
followed with a sharply hit ball to Weston Franco at second base
that would have been an easy double play, but the ball went through
Franco's legs to put runner's on first and third. Michael Morgan
followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game and Brian Weeks
singled. Matt Roam then hit a towering three-run home run to left
field to give the Cowboys a 11-8 lead.
The Cowboys had already gone to ace closer Kyle Barton in the
bottom of the sixth and he struck out the final batter of the sixth
and struck out the side in the seventh. Nathan Love then led off
the eighth with a triple and scored on a Gerard Morris groundout.
Barton struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
HSU responded with four more runs in the eighth inning. Jordan
had an RBI double in the inning and James Gage capped the scoring
with a three-run blast to right center, to make it 15-9.
McMurry made it interesting in the ninth when Jake Mullin hit
his fourth home run of the series to make it 15-10 with one out.
Jeff Jackson then singled and Nathan Saltzgaber struck out to make
it two outs and one runner on. Derek Saltzgaber then singled to
right and Love, the nine hole hitter, drove a three-run home run
out to right field to make it 15-13. Barton got Lipps to fly out to
center to end the game, after Morris had singled.
Roam was 2-for-5 for the Cowboys with five RBIs and Armstrong
went 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Every Cowboy starter got a hit, and
everyone either scored a run or drove a run in as HSU had 16 hits
in the game.
Love was 3-for-4 for McMurry with three runs scored. Cory Davis
took the loss for McMurry in relief of starter Kyle Martin.
Barton earned the win with seven strikeouts in three and
one-third innings of relief. He allowed five runs in the game.
In the first game, the Cowboys trailed 7-0 after the third
inning before scoring three runs in the fourth to make it 7-3. Gage
had a sacrifice fly and Sam Walker had a RBI ground out in the
inning. McMurry pushed the lead to 15-4, before the Cowboys scored
five runs in the seventh to make it 15-9.
Cody Curry picked up the win for McMurry had Morris had four
RBIs and Matt Thompson had three RBIs. Nathan Saltzgaber had a home
run and drove in two. McMurry wrapped out 20 hits in the game.
Eric Roten took the loss for the Cowboys. Taylor Berlin led the
Cowboy offense with three hits.
HSU is now 10-7 on the year and 2-1 in ASC West action. McMurry
fell to 8-6 and 1-2 in league play. HSU will play UT-Tyler on
Monday at 2 p.m. at Hunter Field.
