ALPINE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team swept
a doubleheader against Sul Ross State, Friday afternoon in Alpine,
winning the first game 9-6 and the nightcap 18-3, in American
Southwest Conference action.
HSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning as Brian
Weeks led off with a walk and Matt Roam tripled him home. Regan
Dixon followed with his 13th home run of the season, a blast to
left center.
Sul Ross State got to Cowboy starter Eric Roten with three runs in
the second inning. Eric Mata led off the inning with a home run and
Allan Duke singled through the left side with one out. Richard
Fraire then singled to right and Ricardo Vera singled him home to
chase Roten. Barton then allowed a Monclova RBI single to tie the
game.
HSU came up with four unearned runs in the fourth inning. Weeks
doubled to lead off the inning and Roam lined out. Dixon was
intentionally walked and J.T. Armstrong lined out. Taylor Berlin
then hit a slow roller in front of the mound that Luke Fry fielded
and could have ended the inning but threw high to first and two
runs scored. Jaxon Jordan followed with a two-run single to make it
7-3.
Pedro Saenz had a double to center in the fifth to drive home a run
and J.D. Rivera hit a two-run homer to right in the sixth to make
it 7-6.
HSU added two runs in the seventh on a Kevin Ellison sacrifice fly
and Michael Morgan scored on a wild pitch.
Barton earned his eighth win of the season with five and two-third
innings of relief work for starter Eric Roten. He scattered eight
hits allowed three runs and struck out seven. Eric Fry fell to 0-4
for Sul Ross State.
Weeks had three hits for the Cowboys and Dixon and Jordan each had
two hits and two RBIs for HSU.
Tim Kriegel was again superb for the Cowboys on the mound in the
second game as he went the distance, scattering six hits and
allowing only three runs, while striking out six.
The Cowboy offense exploded in the second game for 27 hits and 18
runs, including six home runs. The Cowboys now have 51 home runs on
the season, which is a school record in the non-scholarship era.
Regan Dixon hit a home run in the second game as well to give him
14 and sole possession of the non-scholarship era single-season
home run record.
Each team had a two-run home run in the first inning. HSU's
was by Matt Roam and Javier Arrieta hit his 16th of the season for
Sul Ross State. It stayed 2-2 until the fourth when the Cowboys
scored three runs on a three-run home run by Taylor Berlin. HSU
added a Dixon home run in the fifth.
Jordan and Morgan hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the sixth
inning and Dixon and Armstrong added RBIs in the inning on a double
and single respectively. HSU scored three runs in the seventh and
eighth innings.
Weeks had an RBI single in the seventh and Roam had his second
two-run homer of the game and his ninth home run of the season. In
the eighth, Jordan and Morgan had RBI singles, Roam had a two-run
single and Dixon had a sacrifice fly.
Seven of the nine Cowboy starters had three or more hits in the
game.
HSU is now 23-13 on the year and winners of seven in a row. They
are now 13-5 in ASC West action. Sul Ross State fell to 4-32
overall and 3-15 in league play. HSU hosts UT-Dallas on Tuesday at
6 p.m.
