ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons and Texas-Dallas combined to
hit eight home runs in a 11-9 slugfest at Hunter Field on Tuesday
night, with UTD scoring three runs in the eighth inning to secure
the victory.
UTD hit five solo home runs in the first five innings of the game
to take a 5-4 lead. Corey Ross homered in each of his first three
at-bats Kyle Guest and Randy Lorber each had home runs for UTD.
After the Comets led 2-0, after the top of the first, HSU responded
with three runs in the bottom of the first. Brian Weeks led off the
first with a triple to left and scored on a Matt Roam single to
left. J.T. Armstrong then hit a two-run home run to make it 3-2.
Armstrong had another solo home run in the third to make it
5-4.
UTD scored three runs in the sixth inning with Jared Smith having a
two-run single to right in the inning. HSU responded with four runs
in the sixth. Kevin Ellison had a three-run home run and Weeks
doubled and went to third and scored on wild pitches to tie the
game at 8-8.
In the eighth, UTD took advantage of two Brian Weeks errors to
score three times. Both balls were potential double play balls and
it eventually loaded the bases for catcher Adam Hudec, who doubled
in two runs. Skyler Hoelscher then had a bases loaded walk to score
another run.
HSU added a run in the eight when Weeks singled and scored on three
wild pitches.
Tim Flasik got the win for UTD to improve to 1-1. Skylar Sillivent
took the loss for the Cowboys and Adam Spinn recorded his third
save.
Jaxon Jordan led the Cowboys with three hits and Ross had four runs
scored four hits and three RBIs for UTD.
Hardin-Simmons is now 23-14 on the year and UTD improved to 22-15.
HSU will play host to Texas Lutheran this weekend at Hunter Field
to close the regular season. The winner of the series will be the
top seed from the ASC West in the conference tournament.
