ALPINE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
baseball team scored 12 runs in the top of the sixth inning to
propel the Cowboys to a 15-6 win over Sul Ross State State in
American Southwest Conference action Friday night at Kokernot
Field.
Sul Ross got on the board first with a solo home run by Brett
Keith in the top of the second inning. HSU countered with three
runs in the third inning, thanks to three Sul Ross State errors.
Brian Weeks reached on a two-out error by Javier Arrieta, Matt Roam
walked and Regan Dixon reached on an error by Arrieta. J.T.
Armstrong then had a RBI single and James Gage followed with an RBI
single.
The Lobos played small ball in the fifth for a run as Monte Piper
walked, was bunted to second and scored on a Chris Monclova
double.
HSU busted the game open in the sixth with 12 runs. Gage doubled
with one out and Taylor Berlin reached on an error by Monclova and
Jaxon Jordan was intentionally walked to load the bases. Gage
scored on a wild pitch and then Michael Morgan singled home two
more runs with a ball past a drawn-in infield.
Kevin Ellison then walked and Brian Weeks had a bloop single to
reload the bases. Roam then walked with the bases loaded and Regan
Dixon unloaded on a pitch to left field for his 12th home run of
the season. Armstrong and Gage had back-to-back doubles and Jordan
had an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw to put
runners on second and third. Morgan followed with a three-run home
run to left center.
Sul Ross State added four unearned runs in the eighth inning.
Sam Walker (5-2) was outstanding for the Cowboys on the mound he
went eight innings and allowed only two earned runs. He struck out
a career-best 12 batters including six in a row in the sixth and
seventh innings for the Cowboys. The 12 strikeouts were the most by
a Cowboy pitcher in the non-scholarship era.
Armstrong and Gage had three hits each for the Cowboys and Morgan
and Roam each had two hits. Morgan added five RBIs and Dixon had
three.
HSU is now 21-13 on the year and 11-5 in ASC action. Sul Ross State
fell to 4-30 overall and 3-13 in league play. The teams will play a
1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
