MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowboys basketball team stunned the ETBU Tiger 71-69 with an 18-point comeback to win in American Southwest Conference play on Saturday.
The Cowboys were off to a slow start, trailing by 18 and cutting it to 39-28 at the half. Even with five minutes to go in the game, the Cowboy situation looked dire, down 14 at 63-49.
Hardin-Simmons locked up on defense and went on an incredible run, finishing the final five plus minutes outscoring the Tigers 22-6.
The Cowboys were down four with just 17 seconds left but got a stop and a three-pointer from
Jalen McGee to make it 69-68 ETBU with 12 ticks left.
HSU again got the ball back and completed the big win with a three made from
Will Bartoszek with five seconds left to win the game 71-69.
Bartoszek had 34 in the win, shooting 9-19 and going 15-18 from the free throw line. He also led the team with nine rebounds. McGee went for 14 with a pair of threes for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys shot 42%, going 24-57 with 32 rebounds. ETBU shot 46% at 23-50 with 32 rebounds as well.
Hardin-Simmons improves to 5-2 and moves out to 2-0 in the ASC standings early. The Cowboys will scrimmage at Tarleton State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Stephenville before being back at the Mabee Athletic Complex on Thursday night to host the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets for another ASC matchup at 7:30 p.m.
