NEWARK, N.J. – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl soccer team lost in the final minute of overtime 1-0 to McDaniel College on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA tournament hosted by New York University.
The Cowgirls had one of the most back-and-forth games of the season against the McDaniel Green Terror. Hardin-Simmons held an edge in possessions, but McDaniel was able to create chances in transition.
The first half had both teams with five shots each, and HSU added eight shots in the second allowing six shots from McDaniel. Neither team managed a goal in regulation and the game went into extra time.
The Cowgirls forced the issues in the first overtime and didn't come away with a score. HSU had a few chances late in the second overtime, but McDaniel pulled a stunner shot for a goal in the 110
th minute of the game to win.
The Cowgirls finished with the lead in shots 19-13 while McDaniel had more shots on goal with 7-4. HSU led with corner kicks 11-7.
Jenna Russell started in goal and had six saves for Hardin-Simmons in the 1-0 loss at the end.
The Cowgirls finish the season at the NCAA tournament with a record of 17-2-2 after an ASC championship in the first year under head coach Rusty Ogelsby.
