ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team fell to Trinity 78-71 on Monday evening at the Mabee Complex.
The Cowboys opened the game on a 30-7 run over the first 11:28 of the game, before Trinity started slowly chipping away. The Cowboys led 38-26 at halftime. HSU held the Tigers to 10-of-35 shooting in the first half, while making 14-of-27 shots including 6-of-9 from 3-point range.
HSU led 48-36 with 15:07 to play and the Tigers then hit the Cowboys with an 18-4 run over the next 5:43 to take a 54-50 lead. The Cowboys battled back and led 58-56 with 6:10 to play, but another 11-3 run by the Tigers pushed the lead out to 67-60 with 3:06 to play.
The Cowboys scored the next five points but the Tigers iced the game away down the stretch.
Christian Green led the Tigers with 20 points and hauled in 10 rebounds before fouling out. He also added a team-high five assists. Jacob Millhouse scored 13 points and Jacob Harvey added 12.
Chris Bryant and
Will Bartoszek had 14 points each for the Cowboys and Bartoszek had 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Austin Brewer added 13 points and
Cooper Peterson chipped in 10.
The Tigers had a 28-12 advantage in fast break points and outrebounded the Cowboys 42-33 and had a 13-5 advantage in second-chance points.
HSU is 4-5 on the year and will travel down Ambler Street to play an exhibition at Abilene Christian at 6 p.m. Saturday. Trinity improved to 5-1 on the year.
