Box Score 2 IRVING, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Dallas Crusaders, winning game one 14-1 and taking game two by a final score 13-2.
First year head coach
Casey Wilson got his first win with the Cowgirls on opening day, taking both games against University of Dallas on the road Friday.
The Cowgirls had 14 runs on 14 hits in game one and won 14-1 in five innings.
Kylie Ruiz started in the circle and threw four innings with a pair of strikeouts and one hit allowed in the win.
Brinly Watkins threw the final inning clean for the Cowgirls.
Freshman
Emily Jacobs started in left field for the Cowgirls and got the first runs on the board with a double to score
Honor Knott, who pinch-ran and stole second in the first inning.
Lindsey Ratcliffe singled and Jacobs came home on an error for the second run of the first.
In the third inning the Cowgirls scored eight runs to lead 10-0. The Dallas Crusaders got a run in the third to make it 10-1 and the Cowgirls added four more runs in the fifth inning to end the game with a 14-1 win.
Jacobs,
Madison Mayhew, and
Lindsey Ratcliffe all had three hits in game one.
Madi Hubbard had two hits for the Cowgirls with a double and an RBI.
Jacobs had two doubles in the game with three Cowgirl RBIs and Mayhew drove in two runs. Ratcliffe led with five RBIs and had a triple.
Erin Love,
Kristen McMillan, and
Ashley Easley each had an RBI as well against the Crusaders in the first game.
Game two was more of the same from the Cowgirls with a run in the first inning from a Ratcliffe sac-fly.
Mayhew hit an RBI-single in the third to make it 2-0 Hardin-Simmons. Dallas scored in the third to cut it to 2-1.
Jazlynn Cantu hit another Cowgirl sac-fly for an RBI on the third Cowgirl run un the fourth inning and Love singled to score another to make it 4-1.
Jacobs hit her first career homerun as a Cowgirl in the sixth inning to score two and make it 6-1.
The Cowgirls drove in seven more runs in the seventh inning to win 13-2. Cantu drew a walk for an RBI with the bases loaded to start, and then the Cowgirls scored on a wild pitch.
Grace Fleitman hit an RBI-single to make it 9-1 and then
Haley Henson got two RBIs on a single up the middle.
Haven Williams drove in the final two Cowgirl runs to make it 13-1 and Dallas added another run for a final score of 13-2.
Freshman
Jorey Hood started and pitched a complete game for the Cowgirls in game two. Hood allowed just seven hits in seven innings with two earned runs and three strikeouts.
Henson led the Cowgirls with four hits in game two in the leadoff spot. Mayhew had three hits, while
Ava Dennis and Love each got two Cowgirl hits, including a double from Dennis.
Four Cowgirls tied the lead in RBIs with two, Henson, Jacobs, Williams, and Cantu. Mayhew, Ratcliffe, Love, and Fleitman all had one RBI for the Cowgirls.
Henson, Ratcliffe, and
Ashley Easley each had a stolen base against Dallas in game two.
The Cowgirls start the year 2-0 and will play at Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana on Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
