ALPINE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped all three games in its series at Sul Ross State, falling on walkoff hits in the first two games, 5-4 and 7-6, and dropping the finale, 16-11, at historic Kokernot Field in Alpine.
Game 1
In the first game on Friday evening the Cowboys jumped on the board in the first inning with a
Baylan Vaughan RBI double. Peyten Kennard tied the game in the third with an RBI double and then Lee Kubosh and
Luke Kirkbride traded home runs to tie the game at 2-2.
Gannon Azios gave the Cowboys a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning with a two-run double.
Kennard hit a home run in the sixth inning for the Lobos and then Estevan Ortiz tied the game with an RBI double in the seventh inning.
Karson Leatherwood gunned down a runner at the plate but Primo Vasquez followed up with an RBI single to right for the win.
Jacob Hollingsworth had three hits for the Cowboys and
Jaydon Stephens took the loss in relief.
Brandon Girod started and allowed three runs in five innings of work.
Game 2
The second game was halted in the seventh inning and had to be completed on Saturday.
Kyler Reed had RBI singles in the first and third innings for the Cowboys and HSU trailed 3-2 The Lobos pushed the lead to 5-2 on another Kennard home run.
Sam Buchkowski had a RBI double in the sixth inning and Hollingsworth tied the game in the seventh inning with a two-run single. Then the delay for the fog and mist came.
Jett Forrest gave the Cowboys a 6-5 lead in the seventh with a sacrifice fly. SRSU tied the game in the seventh with an Ortiz RBI single and Aaron Morales won the game in the ninth with an RBI single up the middle.
Wyatt Tumlinson started and went three innings and allowed three runs.
Brandon Bane worked three scoreless innings.
Guy George worked two and one-third innings and took the loss and
Caidon Livingston worked the final batter.
Reed led the offense with three hits.
Game 3
The final game turned into a slugfest but the Lobos had 18 batters reach base in the game and they brought 16 of them home. The Cowboys outhit the Lobos 17-10 but left 12 batters on base and had just one extra base hit as the Lobos hammered out six home runs.
Hollingsworth and Reed each had four hits in the game for the Cowboys and Leatherwood drove in three runs.
Tristan Boedecker started and allowed six runs in two innings to take the loss.
Jace Martinez,
Johnny Follett,
Alex Carte and
Grant Mitzelfelt all threw in relief.
The Lobos used seven different pitchers and Kennard hit his fourth and fifth home runs of the series to pace the offense.
The games did not count in the ASC standings as the Lobos are reclassifying to Division II. HSU is now 7-12 on the year and SRSU improved to 5-14.
HSU returns to action next Friday at Concordia.
