Cowgirls Split a Pair of 1-Run Games with Concordia

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team split a doubleheader with the Concordia Texas Tornados in American Southwest Conference play on Friday night, dropping game one 4-3 and coming back to win games two 2-1 over the Tornados at Ellis Field.

Concordia came out firing in the first inning with three runs to start the evening. The Cowgirls scored two to make it 3-2 in the second inning.

Hardin-Simmons had a little two-out magic in the second with a walk followed by a triple from Kristen McMillan to score one and an RBI single from Jazzlyn Cantu to make the deficit 3-2.

Concordia added a run in the fourth and the Cowgirls got on the board again with an RBI-double from Ashley Easley to make it 4-3. HSU couldn't get back on top in game one and fell 4-3.

The Cowgirls got three runs while being held to four hits in loss in game one. Haven Williams had the start and went seven innings with a strikeout in the complete game.

Hardin-Simmons had another nail-biter in the second game against Concordia, winning 2-1.

Both the Cowgirls and the Tornados notched six hits in game two. HSU got out of a jam with a double play in the first inning, gunning down a runner at the plate to keep the game scoreless.

The Tornados got a solo home run from Kirk in the fourth to take the lead 1-0. The Cowgirls had to muster a comeback in the final three innings.

Cantu tied the game with an RBI-sac fly in the fifth inning and Ella Salinas singled to drive in the go-ahead run in the sixth to lead 2-1.

Kylie Ruiz started pitching game two for the Cowgirls and had a no decision with a tie game after five innings with a strikeout. Freshman Jorey Hood came on in the sixth and finished with the win with one strikeout in two innings.

The Cowgirls are now 15-3 and 4-1 in the ASC and Concordia is 10-10 and 2-6 in conference play with the rubber match coming up on Saturday at 12 noon on Ellis Field.
