AUSTIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team was not able to generate any offense and fell 1-0 and 6-0 to Concordia on Saturday afternoon in an American Southwest Conference doubleheader.
The first game was a pitcher's duel as Cowboy starter
Grant Mitzelfelt and Concordia Otto Franz battled it out. Mitzelfelt, who came out early in his last start against UTD and missed two straight starts, was back in the rotation and he limited the Tornados to one run on four hits in the hard-luck complete-game loss. He is now 1-3 on the year.
Franz (3-2) did not allow a Cowboy hit until
Kyler Reed's single in the top of the seventh. Concordia scored its only run in the third inning when Brandon Goynes scored from second base when Jonathan Swift beat out an infield single.
The second game was more of the same for the Cowboys as
Sam Buchkowski had the first hit of the game in the fifth inning.
Nick Ellington had the other hit for the Cowboys.
Brandon Girod took the loss as he started and worked three innings. With two outs in the second inning he walked two batters and hit another to load the base and Zach Seigrist hit a three-run double.
Another encouraging sign was
Caidon Livingston who had been out since the first week of the season (other than one batter last week) was able to go three perfect innings. He was an All-ASC performer last season and has been out of the rotation with an injury.
Concordia added a run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.
Caleb Smith,
Jace Martinez and
Jaydon Stephens all worked an inning out of the bullpen for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys are now 7-15 overall and 2-7 in league play and Concordia improved to 13-10 overall and 5-7 in conference action.
HSU ended its 13-game road streak with six straight losses after winning the six games prior to that. HSU returns home for a pivotal series with Howard Payne that begins on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
