Box Score 2 BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team got the first two wins of a three-game ASC series against the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets on Thursday afternoon on the road.
The Cowgirls won game one 4-3 and took game two 7-2 over Howard Payne behind a pair of complete games from Cowgirl starting pitchers
Haven Williams and
Jorey Hood.
Williams went seven innings with three hits given up and tied her career high with nine strikeouts against Howard Payne in game one. She improves to 7-3 in the circle this year for Hardin-Simmons.
The Cowgirls got up 3-0 in the second inning of game one on an error and RBIs coming from Jazzlyn Cantu and
Haley Henson. The Yellow Jackets tied the game with runs in the fourth and sixth innings to make it 3-3.
Henson singled to drive in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and Williams struck out the final Howard Payne batter to finish the win 4-3 in game one.
Henson led the team with two hits and two RBIs with a double.
Lindsey Ratcliffe also hit a double for the Cowgirls.
Kristen McMillan stole three bases in game one for HSU.
Jorey Hood started game two and settled in for a complete game with just two runs on nine scattered hits and a career-high six strikeouts in her freshman season at HSU. Hood is now 3-0 on the year pitching for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls had a tie game at 2-2 after the second inning with an RBI-double from
Emily Jacobs and a Cantu RBI on a single.
Madi Hubbard hit a sac fly to score the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, and the Cowgirls plated two more in the inning on wild pitches to lead 5-2.
Henson walked in an RBI in the sixth inning and
Ella Salinas drove in the final Cowgirl run in the seventh to make it a 7-2 ballgame.
Henson and Cantu each reached base three times on a hit and two walks apiece and
Ashley Easley stole three bases while Henson stole a pair in the 7-2 win at Howard Payne.
The Cowgirls improve to 17-3 and will finish the American Southwest Conference series looking for a sweep against Howard Payne on Friday at 3 p.m. in Brownwood.
