Cowgirls Split in Alpine Against Sul Ross

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ALPINE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team split, winning 8-4 and losing 14-13 playing against the Sul Ross State Lobos in a Friday night non-conference doubleheader.  
 
The Cowgirls scored eight runs on 13 hits in game one and had 13 runs on 18 hits in game two against the Lobos Friday night.
 
HSU was tied 4-4 with Sul Ross in game one in the fourth inning before Honor Knott ran home to score on an error and Madison Mayhew followed with a solo home run, her second homer of the year, to make it 6-4 Cowgirls.
 
Mayhew had another RBI on a single in the seventh inning and Ashley Easley tripled to score the final Cowgirl run in the 8-4 win.
 
Haley Henson, Emily Jacobs, and Jazlynn Cantu all had two hits with a double and an RBI each in game one. Mayhew had two hits with two RBIs with the home run.
 
Haven Williams started in the circle for game one and went five innings in the win with a strikeout on eight hits and four runs. Kylie Ruiz pitched two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts and one hit allowed to finish the Lobos.
 
The Cowgirls were quickly in a pickle in game two, down 5-0 after two innings to the Lobos of Sul Ross.
 
Hardin-Simmons got one run on an error in the third before Cantu and Jacobs each drove in a run in the fifth inning. The Lobos added another to make it 6-3 Sul Ross in the fifth inning.
 
Hardin-Simmons scored nine runs in the sixth inning to lead 12-6. Cantu, Henson, and Kristen McMillan each had an RBI while Madi Hubbard, Jacobs, and Easley drove in two RBIs apiece in the inning.
 
The Cowgirls added another to lead 13-6 before a rally from the Lobos took the win 14-13.
 
Easley had four hits in game two with a double and two RBIs. Henson had three hits with an RBI, and Jacobs hit three doubles to drive in three Cowgirl runs. Hubbard, Ella Salinas, McMillan, and Cantu all had two hits in the second game.
 
Kelly Shackeford started game two for the Cowgirls and went 1.1 innings with a strikeout. Jorey Hood pitched 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and Aubrianna Salazar went two innings. Ruiz finished pitching for the Cowgirls and had the loss in the Sul Ross comeback.
 
The Cowgirls are 13-2 after the split doubleheader on Friday and will finish up at Sul Ross on Saturday in the final non-conference game at 12 noon in Alpine.
