Cowgirls Leave Sul Ross with Series Win Saturday

Box Score ALPINE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team won 15-13 against the Sul Ross State Lobos in non-conference play on Saturday to take the series in Alpine this weekend.
 
The Cowgirls split two games on Friday night at Sul Ross and won the series with the game three win 15-13 in a shootout on the road.
 
Hardin-Simmons went up 1-0 in the first scoring on an error, but Sul Ross would score four in the first inning to lead 4-1.
 
The Cowgirls got two back in the second inning with RBIs from Emily Jacobs and Ella Salinas to make it 4-3.  
 
HSU tied the game when Kristen McMillan scored on a wild pitch and took the lead with an RBI-double from Haley Henson in the third inning. The train kept rolling and the Cowgirls scored a total of seven runs in the third inning.
 
Madi Hubbard and Lindsey Ratcliffe each drove in a run before the Cowgirls scored another on an error. Salinas hit her first home run of the season for two more runs to make it a 10-4 Cowgirl lead after three.
 
Freshman Addyson Kahklen hit a triple down the line to score two Cowgirl runs in the fifth inning. Sul Ross got a few back to make it 12-10 after five.
 
Jacobs went yard for the seventh time this year in her 16th game as a Cowgirl for two RBIs in the sixth inning and Jazlynn Cantu got a sac fly to score another to make it a 15-13 final score for the HSU win.
 
The Cowgirls had 15 hits in the win, four coming from Jacobs. She and Salinas led the team with three RBIs each.
 
Haley Henson had three hits with a double in the game. Ratcliffe, Salinas, and McMillan all had two hits in the Cowgirl win.
 
Freshman southpaw Paige Ontiveros got the start in the circle and pitched two innings for the Cowgirls. Haven Williams came in four two innings and had the win in the inning where the Cowgirls scored seven runs. Kylie Ruiz threw one inning with a strikeout and Jorey Hood came in to get her first save of the year with two innings and no runs allowed.
 
The Cowgirls improve to 14-2 and win the series playing at Sul Ross State and will return home for spring break before hosting the University of St. Thomas (TX) Celts on March 16 for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Lou Morton Ellis Field.
