ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team fell 9-4 to McMurry on Friday night at Hunter Field in the opening game of an American Southwest Conference series.
Freshman
Jacob Hollingsworth put the Cowboys on the board in the first inning with a solo home run. McMurry took a 3-1 lead with a three-run home run from Michael Smosna. Smosna added an RBI single in the fifth inning to make the score 4-1.
Hollingsworth added a two-run double in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 4-3 and HSU had chances to tie the game in the fifth and sixth but left a runner in scoring position.
McMurry made the Cowboys pay again in the seventh with a three-run two-out home run for the second time in the game as Nolan Scherencel went deep. Riley Double had an RBI double in the eighth to make the score 9-3.
HSU picked up a run on an infield hit by
Baylan Vaughan in the ninth inning.
Wyatt Tumlinson (3-8) started and went four and two-third innings allowing four runs on six hits to take the loss.

Johnny Follett and
Grayson Bearden all worked out of the bullpen for the Cowboys.
Hollingsworth had two of the seven Cowboy hits and Hood and Smosna had three hits each for McMurry.
Braydon Durst went four and one-third innings allowing four hits and three runs. He was relieved by Bryson Morrill who allowed just three hits and one run over four and two-third innings to move to 3-0 on the year.
McMurry improved to 19-18 overall and to 11-11 in conference play. HSU fell to 13-23 overall and to 8-14 in league play. The teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, weather permitting. It will also be senior day for 13 Cowboy seniors with the ceremony between the games of the doubleheader.
