BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl volleyball team fought back to win 3-1 at Howard Payne after dropping the first set in American Southwest Conference play on the road Friday night.
The Cowgirls dropped a tough finish in the first set 25-23 to the Yellow Jackets of Howard Payne.
Hardin-Simmons was in dire straits, trailing 21-18 in the second set before coming back to even the match with a 28-26 win in set two.
The Cowgirls again started slow in the third set and were down 10-6 before a ridiculous 11-0 run to go up 17-10. The Cowgirls finished with a win in set three 25-16 thanks to a big block and then a kill both from
Jadyn Hernandez for the Cowgirl set point.
HSU pushed out to a lead in set four and held off Howard Payne 25-23 to take the match 3-1 in ASC play.
Liz Underwood led the Cowgirls with 15 kills and
Leigh Jespersen had 13 kills.
Abbi Allen and
Gabby Jones also hit for a high percentage against Howard Payne, hitting .500 and .462 with nine kills and seven kills, respectively.
Ali Meyer led the Cowgirls with 22 assists and
Keatyn Rodgers had 17 assists.
Kat Martinez led the Cowgirls with nine digs and Hernandez totaled five blocks in the match.
The Cowgirls improve to 9-4 and 1-1 in ASC play and will have the rest of the weekend off before hosting the ETBU Tigers for an ASC match on Friday at 6 p.m. in the Mabee Athletic Complex.
