MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' volleyball team swept a pair of matches on Saturday at the East Texas Baptist Classic, sweeping Huntingdon 25-18, 25-15, 25-15 in the morning and beating Hendrix 25-18, 25-11 and 25-17.
Against Huntingdon, the first was game was tied at 15 when the Cowgirls went on a 10-3 run to close out the set. The second set was tied at 12 and the Cowgirls rolled off five straight points to take control of the set and ran it out for a 2-0 lead. HSU put the third set with a 6-1 run to start and were never threatened.
Liz Underwood led the Cowgirls with 14 kills and
Gabby Jones added 11. Underwood also led the defense with eight digs and
Ari Villanueva added seven. Jones and Villanueva each had four service aces for HSU.
Ali Meyer led the way with 18 assists and
Keatyn Rodgers added 12.
Against Hendrix in the first game HSU led 11-9 and then took control with a 6-0 run for a 17-9 lead. HSU opened the second game with a 10-2 run and rolled to the 2-0 lead. HSU used an 11-2 run to open an advantage in the deciding game.
Jones led the offense with 10 kills,
Ellie Carter added eight and
Abbi Allen seven. Jones added five blocks for the Cowgirls. Meyer had 15 assists and Rodgers 13. Villanueva had 16 digs and Underwood added 12.
The Cowgirls are now 5-2 on the year and will return to action on Thursday at Mary Hardin-Baylor in the American Southwest Conference opener.
