ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowboy soccer team fought to a 2-2 draw against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday evening at the HSU Soccer Complex. The Cowboys struck twice in the opening half before the Crusaders rallied to equalize in the second period.
Colin Elliott opened the scoring early, finding the net in the fifth minute for the senior's first career goal off an assist from
Benny Lube to put the Cowboys ahead 1-0.
Gabriel Rodriguez doubled the lead with his first career goal as a freshman in the 42
nd minute, giving HSU a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
UMHB responded with a pair of second-half goals from Grayson Bowler in the 67
th and 74
th minutes. Despite heavy pressure late, the Cowboys defense and goalkeeper duo of
Carson Null and
Griffin Cardwell combined for seven saves to secure the draw.
HSU recorded 11 shots and four shots on goal, while UMHB tallied 22 shots and nine on target. The match featured physical play throughout, including four yellow cards and a red card issued to the Crusaders.
With the result, Hardin-Simmons moves to 5-8-3 overall and 2-2-3 in American Southwest Conference play. Mary Hardin-Baylor now sits at 12-2-4 overall and 5-0-1 in league action heading into the ASC championship tournament next weekend hosted by UMHB in Belton.
