ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl soccer knocked off the top-seed Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders 1-0 on Saturday evening at the HSU Soccer Complex, improving to 9-3-2 overall and 4-2 in American Southwest Conference play.
After a tightly contested defensive battle, the Cowgirls broke through in the 87
th minute when
Lexi Templin found the back corner of the goal, finishing a great feed across from
Presleigh Thiessen. The game-winner marked Templin's fourth goal this season.
HSU held a 17-15 edge in total shots, placing nine on target. The Cowgirls also recorded eight corner kicks to UMHB's nine.
Goalkeeper
Abigail Medlin tallied six saves and earned the shutout in the victory, highlighted by a penalty-kick stop in the 67
th minute to preserve the scoreless tie.
Mary Hardin-Baylor received eight saves from goalkeeper Aubrey Tipton but was unable to convert on multiple late attacks and fell to 7-5-6 and 5-1 in the ASC with the loss.
The Cowgirls will head to the ASC championship tournament next weekend hosted in Belton by UMHB beginning on Thursday.
