ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowboy basketball team extended its unbeaten start to the season with a 79-70 victory over crosstown foe McMurry on Tuesday night at the Mabee Complex.
Junior forward
Asher Fleming led the Cowboys with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting, adding seven rebounds and a block.
Trevion Howell followed with 14 points, including 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, while
Tyler Williams added a perfect 4-for-4 performance from the floor to finish with ten points off the bench.
Hardin-Simmons (3-0) built a 39-30 halftime lead and held off several War Hawk rallies in the second half. The Cowboys out rebounded McMurry 48-42 and outscored them 42-32 in the paint.
Defensively, HSU tallied ten blocks, led by three from
Myles Amason and two each from
Chris Bryant and
Jamar Ingram. The Cowboys also forced 11 turnovers that translated into 19 points on the other end.
McMurry (1-2) was led by Zack Rygg with 15 points and Jalen Cherry with eight points and 11 rebounds.
Hardin-Simmons shot 43 percent (27-of-63) from the field and 87 percent (20-of-23) at the free-throw line, while holding McMurry to 35 percent shooting overall.
The Cowboys will return to action on Thursday, November 13, traveling to the Univ. of Dallas in non-conference play at 7 p.m. in Irving, Texas.
