RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team fell 5-4 to UT Dallas in the first game of a non-conference series on Saturday at UTD baseball field in Richardson.
 
UTD scored a run in the first inning on an RBI single by Nico Fernandez. The Cowboys took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. 
Knox Wilson had an RBI ground out and another run scored on a wild pitch.
 
HSU added to the lead in the fifth inning on a 
Baylan Vaughan RBI single.
 
The Comets scored three times in the fifth to take the lead. Jaeger Self had an RBI fielder's choice and Albert Garza added a two-run double.
 
UTD pushed the lead to 5-3 in on a Lucas Rexin RBI single. HSU cut the deficit to 5-4 on a 
Jake Trapani sacrifice fly.
 
Brock Calvillo led the offense with two of the six hits for the Cowboys.
 
Jace Martinez had a solid outing for the Cowboys, working five and two-third innings, allowing five runs (three earned). He took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year. 
Ethan Riley worked two and one-third scoreless innings of relief.
 
Apollo Cassimatis earned the win on the mound. He allowed just one earned run over seven innings of work, scattering five hits. Derek Brieden worked a scoreless ninth for his first save.
 
Rexin and Garza had two hits each to pace the Comets.
 
The Cowboys are 2-2 on the year and the Comets improved to 4-0. The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.
